Running Courses

Our England Athletics trained Leader in Running Fitness, Tanya Hughes, will lead the course and will guide, advise, help and encourage you throughout. There will be a structured warm up and cool down. Running specific strengthening exercises will be included as part of the session, which will help your running and hopefully to avoid any injuries too.

6 Week Beginners Running Course

Who is the course for?

The course is designed for anyone who wants to take up running but never quite had the fitness, confidence or motivation to do it.

In order to qualify to join the course you must already be comfortable walking for 30 minutes or more. You will need to complete a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire before starting and if you have a known health condition, your GP will just need to give you the all clear to go ahead.

It is not suitable for those who can already run for stretches of 10 minutes or more or for anyone who has run 5km or more in the past twelve months.

What you need to do during the course

The plan involves up to 4 runs per week, with a day of rest and two days of easy walking.

During the course, you should ideally run 2/3 times a week in addition to the Thursday session. Think of it as “homework!” Tanya may well be available on other days during the week to go with you and support you or you may choose to make contact with other members of the course and go together. There is a Facebook group which you will be able to join for help, support, advice and motivation.

it’s an 8 week plan but there will be 7 sessions, with a weeks break for May half term. We start with a mix of walking and running to gradually build up your fitness and stamina. As the weeks go by you will do less walking and more running and by the end of week 8 we will be RUNNING the Parkrun at Longrun Meadow on Saturday 22nd June at 9am as our 5K! Friends and family welcome to come along and support you!

The sessions will be relaxed and fun and the great thing is, you won’t be doing it alone.

6 Week Improvers Running Course

Who is the course for?

The Improvers running course is aimed at people who have completed the 5k distance and want to really consolidate their running and progress their stamina, technique and fitness.

Improvers should either be able to run/walk comfortably for 5km. The sessions will always consist of a warm-up and a cool down and will be a mix of timed runs, longer distances and a variety of speed drills and high intensity workouts that will challenge you, to ultimately improve your overall strength and performance and limit your chances of picking up an injury.
